This is a photograph of a sunrise from the top of Mount Fuji. Quite a special sight.
There were too many people there. I suppose that’s what you get for climbing in season. But we got ahead of the crowds on the way up, that was good. Although we had to wait 3 hours at the […]

So, Nic was here. We travelled around a lot and there’s really far too much to type down. Our big trips were to Kyoto and Tokyo so I’m going to make a post of each. I’m also not going to post loads and loads of pictures, because that’s kinda silly. I’m sure I’ll post the […]

So, I’ve finally given in and am writing a much-requested blog entry. I think Paul would like me to write about the time I spent in Japan with him because he doesn’t know where to start. Which is fair enough, because there is plenty to talk about.
There’s Kyoto. We spent five days in Japan’s ancient […]

A couple of weeks ago was the Sukagawa fire festival. It’s a town south of Koriyama whose castle was burned down a while ago and so they commemorate the lives lost by burning a lot of big torches every year.
A whole pile of JETs were asked to take part, so a whole pile of us […]

Guess which day I’m carry a 3 tonne torch through the streets of Sukagawa. At least there’ll be free sake. I think I need it.

In Japanese, the proper use of ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ is often the exact opposite of English, especially when answering negative interrogative sentences. The response to a yes/no question in Japanese indicates agreement or disagreement to the presented circumstances of the question, instead of corresponding directly with the condition of the verb in the answer.

Last week was Nihonmatsu’s annual chochin matsuri (lantern festival). Such a cracking festival, really spectacular, and in my home town with all my students going nuts. Much fun. A whole bunch of other JETs came to town to be plied with sake.
The festival is a 3 day event but the main night is Wednesday where […]

Ok, this is nuts. So much to write about. When faced with too much to write, don’t write anything.
Things I need to tell you about:
1. fun on the segway + pics of me being a fool
2. coming to Japan + the craziness that is Tokyo + pics (of course)
3. Nihonmatsu + the new home + […]
Some info I got about where I’ll be and what I’ll be doing in Japan and another generic (but nice) sunset photo.
Nihonmatsu: population 64,371. Apparently. 18 km from Fukushima-shi, and I’ll guess about the same to Koriyama as it does appear to be bang in the middle of them.
Climate: Hot and humid in summer (~30°C […]
